Are you aware that asphalt shingles are petroleum-based that are wasting our limited resources, our money and our planet? Asphalt shingles increase dependency on fossil fuels and must be replaced every 12 to 20 years. These are nothing more than fibrous materials soaked in petrochemicals that pollute our ground water every time it rains. Aside from that, there is no good way to dispose them.
Nowadays, eco-friendly products like metal roofs are quickly replacing petroleum-based shingles. According to McGraw-Hill Construction and Analytics survey, metal roofing consists 11 percent of the residential re-roofing market, more than doubling in just ten years.
In fact, highly reflective cool colored metal roofs are sustainable products that can reduce your luxury home’s energy needs.
A homeowner can save up to 25 percent in cooling costs compared to a dark-gray asphalt shingle based on the test conducted by Oak Ridge National Laboratories (ORNL). The test also showed that the combination of venting and increased reflectance can decrease heat from penetrating the roof deck by 45 percent for stone-coated metal roofs compared to an asphalt shingle roof in certain climates. There are also similar results with standing-seam cool-colored metal roof.
Take advantage of the roofing tax credits now. You may be eligible for a tax credit worth 30 percent of the material costs up to $1,500 per home if you will make energy-efficient updates to your luxury home including the installation of a painted or a coated Energy Star labeled metal roof by December 31, 2010.
